This patient came to me and my team in her early 30's with a challenging presentation of Amelogenesis Imperfecta or AI. AI is a genetic condition which affects the formation of the enamel layer of the teeth. Sometimes it affects the thickness, or the density, or both. It makes the patient very cavity prone, and makes restoration of their teeth difficult in the long-term.
The state of her teeth and smile really affected her interaction with the world, and she was affected emotionally by it. The first time we did a prototype design try-in 🦷 in her mouth, where she could actually see the blueprints of the plan, we all started crying. It's really special to be able to do this and provide this comprehensive care to patients like this. ❤️
Her care took a few surgeries to place dental implants, and build back lost bone and gum tissue, but it was important to the patient to try to maintain teeth that had the best chance of success. With her extreme cavity risk, we planned to replace all back teeth with dental implant bridges. Teeth in the back are the hardest to clean and maintain, so placing implants in these areas was an important way to minimize failures and remakes. For her front teeth, we kept her teeth and made crowns.
In the end, she was a very grateful and happy lady. I'm so happy for her transformation, and the result my team was able to give her. What an honor to be a part of this patient's path to healing. 😁
